How Clearly Can I Actually See?

I was recently chatting with a man who’d just undergone cataract surgery on one of his eyes. He shared with me that the first thing that he noticed when looking out of the eye he’d had the operation on, was how bright colours were, especially white. He described how it had been like looking at old photos, or the sepia filtered ones that have that dirty brown aged look to them. You loose the crisp white, but your vision doesn’t change overnight, it’s a gradual change.

So often, it’s the same with our faith, our prayer life, our reading the Bible or our attendance at church. It’s a gradual change, that over time becomes a big change, that we become used to, it becomes familiar, it becomes our new norm. As in the case of my friends cataract, there’s nothing you can do about it yourself, even if you’re aware of the changes or the issues. It takes the skilled hands of the surgeon to bring a resolution and a healing.

I was suddenly reminded of this recent conversation, when I was presented with a google stylised version of a picture which I took on Saturday afternoon. I’d gone for a walk behind the holiday cottage we’re enjoying in mid-wales. I found my way down to the banks of the river Usk and took my phone out to take a few photos that I could show to Ruth when I got back. As we later looked at the images, I was a little disappointed that they didn’t fully capture the majesty of what I had experienced, there was something missing. The lighting was slightly off, the crispness of the vegetation was lost in murky shadows, but to Ruth’s eye they were really good, as she’d not experienced the real thing. Then last night google presented me with their stylised and enhanced version of one of my pictures and the difference was incredible.

How sharp, defined and colourful are the images you see?
