Solomon was the son and heir of Israel’s great King David, but he showed great humility, maturity and wisdom when God asked him what he wanted. He didn't ask for fame or wealth for himself, he just asked for wisdom to rule the people well. He put that over everything else - not an easy thing to do, especially as being the King he would have been surrounded by 'yes men', people who just wanted to get out of the relationship what they could for themselves. He didn't rely on people protecting him, making decisions for him or putting him on a pedestal. He earned the people's and the worlds respect by being wise and humble, putting God first and building on the legacy that his father David had left.
Solomon was prepared to go against the flow! In our social media fuelled world, it definitely goes against the tide of self promotion, but God honoured him for his choices. The unselfish request for wisdom, resulted in him being the go to guy for all the world leaders of his day. What would the UK’s response be to the current terrible situation in Afghanistan, if our political leaders sought God’s wisdom instead of playing politics with people’s lives?
On a personal level, Solomon’s actions are a challenge to me everyday, what about you?
