Watching the news today, I was struck by the story of the former rugby player Kevin Sinfield who is running 101 miles in 24 hours to raise money for MND research. As part of the report, there was film of his former team mate, Rob Burrow who is suffering with MND but who retains a positive outlook on life. What really came across was the love and true friendship that these guys had for each other. The reporter said that everyone should have a friend like Kevin, who is prepared to go the extra mile, to put up with pain and discomfort for his friend.
I was left with a slightly different thought, am I that kind of friend to those I come into contact with? I might not be physically able to run for 101 miles (or even 1 mile!), but am I prepared to go the extra mile, whatever the cost? I was drawn back to Hebrews 10:22-25 in the Message version says:
“So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.”
How inventive can I be in encouraging others?
